AUTODESK SHIPS AutoCAD RELEASE 12 FOR DECstation/ULTRIX
Sausalito, CA - December 14, 1992 - Autodesk, the leading desktop CAD
software company, announced today that AutoCAD Release 12 is now available
for customers running ULTRIX (version 4.3 or higher) on RISC-based DECstation
hardware. ULTRIX, Digital Equipment Corporation's implementation of UNIX,
provides DEC customers a competitive open-systems alternative with strong
multitasking, connectivity, and interoperability characteristics. AutoCAD
Release 12 offers fast performance, a flexible graphical user interface, and
a comprehensive set of new and enhanced drawing, rendering, plotting, and
data security and exchange functions. An SQL interface to commercial database
management systems and a 2D Region Modeler are also new in Release 12.
In the United States, Canada, and Latin America, the English-language version
of AutoCAD Release 12 for DECstation/ULTRIX can now be obtained through
Authorized Autodesk Dealers and Distributors.
AutoCAD is fully supported on the DECstation 3100 and DECstation 5000 series
(includes Personal DECstation, and DECstation 100 and 200 series). Currently,
over 175 AutoCAD applications have been developed and are being marketed for
this platform.
"Platforms like the DECstation--specifically designed for compute-intensive
applications--are critical to the rapid growth of technical workstation-based
CAD, which is a key factor in our strategy for the future," said Len Rand,
vice president of Autodesk's Design Automation Group. "AutoCAD is already the
bestselling CAD package on the DECstation and with this version of Release 12
we are making it possible for DECstation customers to continue to invest in
this technology. Customers looking for the flexibility of an open computing
environment while positioning themselves for future growth will be well-served
by this product."
"AutoCAD's strong presence in the CAD marketplace endows the availability of
its Release 12 software on Digital's DECstation platforms with a particular
significance," said Mike Mancuso, group manager of Digital's Independent
Software Vendor Program. "The combination provides our mutual customers with
a powerful tool for their CAD requirements, as well as the investment
protection benefits inherent in an open, growth-oriented computing
environment."
All basic AutoCAD Release 12 features are supported in this new version of
AutoCAD, including the AutoCAD Development System (ADS) and AutoLISP, AutoCAD
Device Interface, null display capabilities, and 8-bit font support. Also
shipped with AutoCAD Release 12 is Advanced Modeling Extension (AME) Release
2.1, which requires a separate authorization code to be activated. A bonus
CD-ROM containing hundreds of files--AutoLISP and ADS routines, utilities,
fonts, toolkits, tutorials, and more--is also included.
In addition, AutoCAD Release 12 for DECstation/ULTRIX offers:
o Motif user interface
o Copy and paste/text-scrolling in the text window
